May 28-31, 2008 Stockholm, Sweden Conference headquarters: Långholmen, billed as the green island in the middle of Stockholm. "The News Ombudsman today and tomorrow" Wednesday, May 28 19–22 -- Reception sponsored by Dagens Nyheter, the biggest morning newspaper in Sweden, held on the 23rd (top) floor of the Dagens Nyheter building. Conference registration, an important short survey to fill out, welcoming words from ONO and Dagens Nyheter, food, beverages and a presentation of the origin of the ombudsman by former National Press Ombudsman Pär-Arne Jigenius. Thursday, May 29 ONO board member Lilian Öhrström, News Ombudsman at Dagens Nyheter, opens the conference at the media centre of Dagens Nyheter. 9.00 -- The News Ombudsman Today: presentations of recent surveys and academic research on news ombudsmen by Dr Cristina Elia, Switzerland, (Newspaper ombudsman profile and activity: an international overview) and Esben Ørberg, Denmark, (Pitfalls and barriers on the road to a succesful ombudsman) plus some remarks by Torbjörn von Krogh, Sweden. Jan van Groesen, the Netherlands, introduces MON, Media Ombudsman Nederland. Dr Damian Tambini of London School of Economics presents a research project. Moderator: Torbjörn von Krogh 10.30 -- Individual harm vs public interest: the National Press Ombudsman of Sweden, Yrsa Stenius, describes her function. 11.00 -- Lilian Öhrström and Janne Andersson, News Ombudsman at TV4, introduces some themes for group discussions. Group discussions. Chairpersons (one for each group): Yavuz Baydar, Sally Begbie, Gina Luberano, Jacob Mollerup, Stephen Pritchard and Judi Whetstine. Coffee will be served during this session. 12.00 -- The groups assemble again and share their thoughts. 13.00 -- Buffet lunch 14.00 -- Learning from your mistakes: How the Swedish evening tabloid Expressen worked with seminars to raise the level of ethical discussions in the newsroom. Presentation by Irina Halling from Expressen. Moderator: Lilian Öhrström 14.45 -- Group discussions on ethical dilemmas. Group chairpersons same as before lunch. Coffee will be served. 15.30 -- The groups assemble again and share their thoughts. 16.30 -- The prize of access – Erik Fichtelius had to quit his job as political analyst at the Swedish Television Corp (public service) when it was revealed that he for six years had done secret and candid interviews with the prime minister. Fichtelius continued with his unique project for four more years until the prime minister left office - and was then rewarded with Swedens premier journalism prize. 17.15 -- What have we heard/learned today? Reflections by Michael Getler, news ombudsman at PBS, USA. 17.25 -- Conference ajourned. 19–23 -- Dinner cruise in the Stockholm archipelago, courtesy of TV4. Friday, May 30 9.00 -- Tomorrow - new challenges for news ombudsmen: presentations by Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, UK, (Readers and Regulators - where does the ombudsman fit?), and professors Jane B. Singer, UK/USA, (Norms and the Network: Journalist Ethics in a Shared Media Space) and Edward Wasserman, USA (New threats to ethical journalism from changes in the news business). Moderator Torbjörn von Krogh 10.40 -- Group discussions on future trends. Chairpersons for the groups: Siobhan Butterworth, Consuelo Cepeda, Michael Getler, Carlos Eduardo Lins da Silva, Thom Meens and Julie Miville-Dechêne. Coffee will be served 12.00 -- The groups assemble again and share their thoughts. 13.00 -- Buffet lunch 14.00 -- New media and new methods: presentations by Eva Landahl, editor of the Swedish transparent tv news-programme Aktuellt, and Mario Vitor Santos, internet ombudsman for IG Group, Brazil. Moderator: Janne Andersson 15.00 -- Ombudsman 2.0: A panel debate with Eva Landahl, Alan Rusbridger, Jane B. Singer, Mario Vitor Santos and Edward Wasserman. Reflections by Jacob Mollerup, news ombudsman at Danmarks Radio, Denmark. 16.40 -- Conference ajourned 18.30-20.30 -- Reception and guided tour at the City Hall (where the Nobel Prize is celebrated each year on December 10th), courtesy of the City of Stockholm. Saturday, May 31 8.30-10 -- Annual business meeting of ONO The address is the Bonnier Building, Torsgatan 21 10.30 -- Can readers, listeners, viewers and web-users improve journalism? Panel discussion in the Bonnier Building– open to the public and hopefully with input from journalism students, readers/viewers and journalists. In the panel amongst others: Pam Platt, ONO-chair, Kerstin Brunnberg, CEO of Swedish Radio Corporation (public service), Lilian Öhrström, Yavuz Baydar and Michael Getler.
